Commodity Modeling and Pricing: Methods for Analyzing Resource Market Behavior (Wiley Finance) Review

Commodity Modeling and Pricing: Methods for Analyzing Resource Market Behavior (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is a collection of research papers by people looking at the pricing behaviour of various commodities. The intent is to look at correlations or even causations between a commodity's price and other factors. The result is an eclectic mixture of topics.
One chapter discusses whether fluctuations in wine stockpiles affect wine prices. Apparently, there had been very little prior work on wine pricing, especially in a global context. Inventory fluctuations in the major wine producing countries are given, along with changes in pricing in those nations. Various statistical tests are done to tease out any correlations.
Other chapters delve into subjects like coal in the US and Indonesia, and scrap metal prices in the US.
A strong background in statistics is required to understand the book.

In preparation to take the Professional Engineeringexamination, I stumbled across this book. As I paged through it, Ifelt comfortable that the author was an expert in the material, and communicated to me in the method I prefer--clear diagrams, drawings, equations, and crisp text. The use of modelling showed me a new way to understand and apply basic engineering principles. I finally had a competent mentor for applying engineering principles to real life. My only wish is that the author write more books on applied engineering!

Probability: Modeling and Applications to Random Processes Review

Probability: Modeling and Applications to Random Processes
Average Reviews:

Much of the material here is well covered in other texts on probability. But Miller gives more emphasis on the modelling aspect. For this, the book has examples of some rather obscure probability distributions, that other, more standard texts tend to omit. Which is one attraction of the book.
But the main value of the book might be when we get past the introductory material about simple probability concepts. And where we deal with actually trying to model a given random process. For you as a researcher, what you deal with might not be in any of the textbooks. So how can you find an existing distribution, or, more to the point, make up one, that fits your data? A lot of books are frustratingly useless on this aspect. But Miller at least has some material that is informative.

Improve Your Probability of Mastering This TopicThis book takes an innovative approach to calculus-based probability theory, considering it within a framework for creating models of random phenomena. The author focuses on the synthesis of stochastic models concurrent with the development of distribution theory while also introducing the reader to basic statistical inference. In this way, the major stochastic processes are blended with coverage of probability laws, random variables, and distribution theory, equipping the reader to be a true problem solver and critical thinker.Deliberately conversational in tone, Probability is written for students in junior- or senior-level probability courses majoring in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or engineering. The book offers a lucid and mathematicallysound introduction to how probability is used to model random behavior in the natural world. The text contains the following chapters:* Modeling* Sets and Functions* Probability Laws I: Building on the Axioms* Probability Laws II: Results of Conditioning* Random Variables and Stochastic Processes* Discrete Random Variables and Applications in Stochastic Processes* Continuous Random Variables and Applications in Stochastic Processes* Covariance and Correlation Among Random VariablesIncluded exercises cover a wealth of additional concepts, such as conditional independence, Simpson's paradox, acceptance sampling, geometric probability, simulation, exponential families of distributions, Jensen's inequality, and many non-standard probability distributions.

Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory Review

Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pragmatic exploitation of cities and their dwellers may be an ineradicable disease that drives the squalor and eventual decline of urban agglommerations, but those who take on diagnosis of the seemingly incurable become saviors if successful. There have been only a handful of modern-era thinkers with the knowledge, insight and creativity on what's wrong with the design of cities and what might be done to make it better, Viollet le Duc, Lewis Mumford, Kevin Lynch among them. It is an unexpected pleasure to encounter a new deep thinker standing on these giants' shoulders in Grahame Shane's magisterial "Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory." The volume is comprehensive on urbanism, historically and intellectually, and will amply reward the student, scholar and professional who reads it in parts or most beneficially, in whole -- more than once. Prepare to be highly educated by this book, not merely advised what to do to get or keep a job or get a project funded by public taxation. If read and comprehended by urban policy makers it will contribute to their escape from real estate development hell, or if not that, it will arm honorable officials against the weasels who want to claim cities as their own profitmaking playpens. Shane wonderfully reminds what it is like to learn from a deeply thoughtful scholar offering open wisdom compared to a city-exploiter pitching secret schemes. Still, one might imagine land developers and good buddy officials searching Shane's compendium for nuggets to use in their next snake oil presentation to suspicious citizen groups rightfully fed up with unceasing demands for bailouts.

This book provides a simple but comprehensive framework for the emerging academic discipline of urban design, from its origins in Europe and America, to contemporary issues of imagery, finance and marketing in an age of globalisation
There is currently no contemporary textbook for urban design that includes a general history and theory of the subject.
Internationally, urban design is more and more becoming a core subject taught in architecture schools. The AIA (US) and the RIBA (UK) both require undergraduates and graduates to study the urban dimension of architectural design. On a wider scale, in Europe, the EU is developing a common architectural curriculum, which includes an urban component for under-graduates. The situation is similar in schools across Asia and Australia.
Aimed at both students and teachers, this book provides a simple and accessible framework, from the origins of urban design and the main techniques developed to deal with the design of fragments of cities, to participatory planning processes, codes, imagery, finance and marketing. Finally, it proposes an innovative vision of contemporary practice based on the work of leading actors and projects in the field.
This book is set to become the key textbook at undergraduate and graduate levels
It is written in an accessible and direct tone, and highly illustrated with many colour and black and white diagrams
It includes a general history and theory of urban design and provides an up-to-date account of contemporary urban conditions

Praise for Recombinant Urbanism:
"Documents a major intellectual advance…eagerly awaited by academics and practitioners all around the world… should become a standard text for schools of architecture and urbanism." Leon Van Schaik, Innovation Professor of Architecture, RMIT, Australia
" …both unique and instrumentally positive. The book is the result of many years of research and writing, and is a small masterpiece in urban studies. It has already proved its worth in the teaching of urban studies, at Columbia, the AA, the Bartlett School, and Cooper Union, to mention only a few of the universities where Dr Shane has had a powerful influence...It is, indeed, one of the very best manuscripts I have read in the field in the last few years." Anthony Vidler, Professor and Dean, Irwin S Chanin School of Architecture, Cooper Union, New York, USA
"I can say without hesitation that I fully endorse Grahame's work…the issues it covers are highly topical and such a book would indeed be widely read by architecture students, urban designers and planners." Colin Fournier, Professor of Architecture &Urbanism, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK
"Of great necessity for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists and professionals in urban planning and design [This] publication will certainly inspire work with city models in a wide range of practice." Henrik W Jensen, Associate Professor in Town Planning, Aarhus School of Architecture, The Netherlands
"A very important book. Shane … has made legible and sensible the reams of recent urban discourse for a general college reader. Because of this labor-intensive effort, this book will be accessible by undergrad architecture programs as well as graduate seminars in urban design and planning. Additionally there is a big interest in UD and UP theory in ecology and social science now, and because of Grahame's generous writing style the book will cross over to these other disciplines. … I can also speak to the international interest in this book; … again Shane has made important urban theories and thinking more widely available to an international student audience. … The legacy the book will have (will be in) convincing people that the design of cities matters, not in the overbearing and over-controlling sense of new urbanism, but in reinforcing the multiple possibilities of contemporary life. Brian McGrath, Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture, Columbia University, USA

I am very happy to see this book by my colleague now in print. Many of the results have been already familiar to me. It summarizes years' efforts by Prof Long Quan and his students on 3d reconstruction and modeling, a fundamental topic in vision, graphics and visualization.
The book is comprehensive in that it is well structured into three parts:
the first fundamental vision geometry, the computational part, and the final application of vision methods to many of modeling and reconstruction topics.
In particular, I very much appreciated the first geometry part, as a more graphics and non-vision researcher myself, it's hard to read too many publications in the vision geometry area that has been well searched in the past two decades. With about 40 pages in a single chapter, chapter 3, we could have an overview of the vision geometry and quickly grasp the most essential algorithms exposed to a larger audience in a concise manner. The part 3 is mostly a collection of recent publications of the author and his students.
Given the potential of Google earth and Virtual Earth's efforts of turning everything into three-dimensional, the techniques systematically described in this book will likely guide its development in the future. I strongly recommend this book as an excellent text for graduate students and also a very useful resource for researchers in this field.

Operational Risk : Modeling Analytics (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) Review

Operational Risk : Modeling Analytics (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I train and consult bankers in credit and operational risk modeling for a living. I mention this because I think I have a decent feel for the pedagogy necessary for helping practitioners grasp the step-by-step application of these often highly theoretical concepts. Not all of us are rocket-scientists from birth and even though I have a quantitative PhD from Princeton, my often slow brain likes having things explained in simple terms. Panjer's book does this beautifully.
He has found the perfect balance between rigor and application--both in the exposition and scope of the book. He also includes examples of every concept that are easy to follow, replicate and extend. Moreover, Panjer takes you right to the edge of where advanced modeling of operational risk is at present. For example, he discusses EVT, copulas, infinite-mean models, kernel smoothing, robust methods, Bayesian methods, aggregation principles and compound processes as well as model selection--all of which characterize the current state of operational risk modeling and research. Indeed, beyond these points of technical modeling, most researchers (even mathematicians) are starting to agree that the returns are greatly diminishing and better qualitative/quantitative mixtures need to be developed (see Neslehova, et.al. Journal of Operational Risk, Spring, (2006)).
"Weak" spots in the book relate, for example, to how it fails to base itself firmly within the current operational risk literature. This is without loss of generality during this the infancy of operational risk modeling but I believe subsequent editions should address (at least to comment on) the growing number of papers popping up on websites and in trade journals. On the other hand, since I am not a statistician, I appreciated the author's references within that field as many of the topics are not part of the standard statistics canon. Finally, the book does not discuss operational risk management though, buying a book entitled "Operational Risk Modeling", I am not sure whether or why anyone would expect it to.
If this book were twice the price (such as for RiskBooks) I would still be happy with my purchase.

Discover how to optimize business strategies from both qualitative and quantitative points of viewOperational Risk: Modeling Analytics is organized around the principle that the analysis of operational risk consists, in part, of the collection of data and the building of mathematical models to describe risk. This book is designed to provide risk analysts with a framework of the mathematical models and methods used in the measurement and modeling of operational risk in both the banking and insurance sectors.Beginning with a foundation for operational risk modeling and a focus on the modeling process, the book flows logically to discussion of probabilistic tools for operational risk modeling and statistical methods for calibrating models of operational risk. Exercises are included in chapters involving numerical computations for students' practice and reinforcement of concepts.Written by Harry Panjer, one of the foremost authorities in the world on risk modeling and its effects in business management, this is the first comprehensive book dedicated to the quantitative assessment of operational risk using the tools of probability, statistics, and actuarial science. In addition to providing great detail of the many probabilistic and statistical methods used in operational risk, this book features:* Ample exercises to further elucidate the concepts in the text* Definitive coverage of distribution functions and related concepts* Models for the size of losses* Models for frequency of loss* Aggregate loss modeling* Extreme value modeling* Dependency modeling using copulas* Statistical methods in model selection and calibrationAssuming no previous expertise in either operational risk terminology or in mathematical statistics, the text is designed for beginning graduate-level courses on risk and operational management or enterprise risk management. Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS Review

Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We all know that practical hydraulic modelling of real-life situations throws up a range of problems that are rarely found in standard text books or software manuals. However, this very comprehensive book covers every scenario that is conceivable - and a few that are not!
It does not dive straight into detailed modelling methods, but explains what tools are available, and stresses the need for planning a modelling study, and, crucially, it includes a full chapter on data requirements - the lack of which is the usual bane of any modeller's life. These chapters needs to be read by anyone who wants to obtain realistic results from a river model.
Although we might think of 'floodplains' as wide open expanses, in fact they tend to be obstructed at intervals with embankments, having bridges and culverts to carry flood flows through them. These structures are fully addressed in the book, with a chapter on each, giving comprehensive guidance on how to model the variety of shapes and conditions that may be encountered in practice.
Modelling is usually required if there is a flooding problem, which may require physical flood alleviation works, so a chapter has been included to give guidance on this aspect of the modeller's work, and how to examine different scheme scenarios and assess their impacts.
However, where the book really surpasses others is in its detailed treament of special cases, which include levees, sluice gates, weirs and split flows - all features that I come across frequently with the legacy of old water mills in the UK, and which can lead to some complex multi-looped systems. Ice cover and ice-jam modelling is also covered, but I don't think I will be needing to use that - especially if the global warming predictions come true!
Other aspects covered include scour and the problems of mobile beds - and this is where having the right data is so important.
The methods of approach for different scenarios cover both steady-state and unsteady-state (hydrodynamic) modelling, but as the latter requires some additional considerations these are covered in a separate chapter.
All-in-all this is an excellent volume, and one that should be beside every modeller's workstation for easy reference. Even modellers who do not use HEC-RAS will find some extremely practical and useful guidance within.

This is a new edition of Gärdenfors' classic text, presented to the community with a Foreword by David Makinson and an appendix containing a paper "Relations between the logic of theory change and nonmonotonic logic" by the author and David Makinson. The following describes the first edition:Knowledge in Flux presents a theory of rational changes of belief, focusing on revisions that occur when the agent receives new information that is inconsistent with the present epistemic state. It brings together, systematises and enlarges upon an already influential body of work by the author and his colleagues on the dynamics of theories and epistemic states. The problem of knowledge representation is one of the most important current research problems in philosophy, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science in general. While most of the research has been devoted to analysing the structure of epistemic states, this book is unique in describing the dynamics of knowledge and belief, and in presenting models of knowledge that focus on expansions, revisions, and contractions of epistemic states."Knowledge in Flux is sure to be widely recognised as the most important systematic contribution to these issues yet made."David J. Uncertainty Modeling and Analysis in Engineering and the Sciences Review

Uncertainty Modeling and Analysis in Engineering and the Sciences
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People make decisions under uncertainties everyday, consciously or unconsciously. Have you ever run into the situation that you browse dozens of web pages to make you feel certain to buy a certain product, but turned out to found out that the information could never be adequate? Why can you see so many computer failures? Have you ever thought that the computer you are using was designed partially by irrational guessing because of inadequate design input? In above cases uncertainties cost people time and money, and in many cases, such as transportation and defense, they cost human lives. Facing uncertainties, when people can no longer collect any more information to make them feel certain, classical theory fails to work as it is expected. Usually people have two options: ignore uncertainties or make a guess of the uncertain information. However, thousands of incidences have indicated that both options can lead to catastrophic results. This book provided a third option, uncertainty modeling and analysis, which has been proved efficient and useful by various applications in many fields ranging from politics to technology.
I have worked for many years in designing high reliable notebook computers in an international company. Uncertainties have caused many persisting problems to my research and develop work. One simple case is the free drop of a notebook computer. No matter how hard I tried to control the drop, there was no useful pattern of shocks which were generated by the drops. Moreover, I cannot drop hundred of these kind of expensive products to get adequate data, thus it seemed almost impossible to make rational decisions in treating drops. I am lucky that I got the chance to attend the author Professor B. M. Ayyub's class and find that this book is quite useful to deal with my problem. Professor Ayyub is a leading authority in the areas of risk analysis, uncertainty modeling, decision analysis, and systems engineering in the world. Another author, George J. Klir is a distinguished professor of systems science at Binghamton University, State University of New York. Their experience and success in academy and industry guaranteed the quality of this book.
At the beginning of the book, the author presented different philosophies and related topics about uncertainty. No technique tools are provided, but the presented information is quite enlightening for engineering and scientific work. The reader is also encouraged to cultivate a habit to analyze problems in a systematic manner, which is quite important but is often ignored. Examples given for this purpose in the book may look overly concise, but because of the difficulty to provide so much information from different schools of philosophy in one chapter, the author has to cut off some information. The first chapter can serve as an independent material for reading. Even if you don't have time to finish the whole book, do not miss the first chapter.
When the reader has the basic understanding of system and uncertainty, the author begins to help the reader to recollect the classical theory of probability, and then establishes a passage from the classical theory to the uncertainty theory. It is worth noticing that, on one hand, the languages, techniques and examples chosen are simple enough for most readers. Even if you have trouble to remember the classical probability theory of your undergraduate study, you won't feel very hard to catch up with the book. On the other hand, this simplification doesn't hurt the information that should be conveyed to the reader. When the passage is established, the reader can find out that she or he can benefit in two aspects: for one thing, the reader can understand some important principles of uncertainty theory more easily based on her or his previous understanding of the counterpart classical theory principles. For another, many methods in dealing with uncertainties can be converted into problems in classical theory, which has plentiful of matured tools. In the following chapters, the reader learned useful skills like synthesizing uncertainty and information, measuring uncertainty, and finally learned how to model uncertainty and analyze it for specific engineering and scientific problems.
Although this book is aimed at engineering and sciences, professionals and students in other areas like marketing and management can also benefit from this book. For example, in computer industry, product managers usually finds it difficult to make a proper product specification to address a new or emerging market without some of the critical information. This book can help them to analyze the uncertainty and to be more able to make the right decision. For the people who want to dive deeper into this area, this book provides a valuable list of reference.
Every book causes some kind of inconvenience for its readers. In this book, the exercise problems at the end of each chapter are well designed, but there is no answer to the question. The book in general is quite well organized, but there is a couple of terms are not inconsistently used. However, I think they won't cause too much trouble for most readers.
In sum, this book provides effective medicine to treat uncertainty, the pain point for most engineering and scientific problems. People who have studied undergraduate probability theory won't have any trouble in reading it. Except textbook, this book can also serve as a valuable manual and handbook for data organizing and decision making in research.

This book is suitable for my graduate studies on computer performance. The author directs us from combinatorics, distribution theory, queue theory to queueing networks in a systematic way. I have read the book at ease for its stepwise elaboration of concepts. However, I have also read with hardship as it requires the readers to possess a good command of mathematics, both pure and applied, in order to go through the book.
For a mathematics graduate studying computer networks, I recommend this book. A novice or a mediocrity should pay more patience to read if not yet at a loss.
This book has aroused my interest and eagerness to know more about computer performance from the viewpoint of queueing and networking. In a word, I enjoy reading this book.

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to probability and stochastic processes, and shows how these subjects may be applied in computer performance modelling. The author's aim is to derive the theory in a way that combines its formal, intuitive, and applied aspects so that students may apply this indispensable tool in a variety of different settings. Readers are assumed to be familiar with elementary linear algebra and calculus, including the concept of limit, but otherwise this book provides a self-contained approach suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate students. The first half of the book covers the basic concepts of probability including expectation, random variables, and fundamental theorems. In the second half of the book the reader is introduced to stochastic processes. Subjects covered include renewal processes, queueing theory, Markov processes, and reversibility as it applies to networks of queues. Examples and applications are drawn from problems in computer performance modelling.

Numerical Simulation in Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction (Monographs on Mathematical Modeling and Computation) Review

Numerical Simulation in Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction (Monographs on Mathematical Modeling and Computation)

I found this book to be a a very good reference for the development of my first simple finite difference code for the solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
It is not extremely detailed in terms of all the methods exsisting in computational fluid dynamics, but it gives you those information that for a beginner might be hard to find. Good practical examples and a detail explanation on the development of a N-S solver also for FREE SURFACE problems.
Practical things as writing a makefile or how to set your code environment are explained aside of the mathematical analysis of the numerical methods involved.
I highly reccommend this book to those who study the subject but never put into practice that knowledge.
The practical examples are written in C.

In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.

formZ 4.0: 3D Modeling, Rendering, and Animation Review

formZ 4.0: 3D Modeling, Rendering, and Animation

I had to learn formZ for my profession and I've gone to great lengths to do so. I had already taken two courses from different instructors and I was still feeling very unstable and was about to start a new job where I really needed the skills. Stressed-out and feeling at a loss, I did a search on the web and found this book for the new 4.0. While I already had a great understanding of the program, this book showed me so many ways to do things I had not yet been taught and I was able to do it on my own. The information is clearly laid out and easy to understand. Icons let you reference exactly where to go but the best part was the tutorials. I have not been able to find in any class or supporting material that came with the software, tutorials that let you practice. This was the most helpful as it's never enough to just know what everything does. You need to implement the info. This book saved my life (and probably my career!!)
