I haven't, as yet, read this book of Dr. Karplus', but I was one of those fortunate enough to have been a student of his, and I have most of his other books, and many binders of notes from his classes.
Dr. Karplus was one of those minds that inspired awe and humility in his students. He had an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge in so many areas and subjects that it seemed he must have spent every second reading, thinking, and integrating to have created his mind. I was so struck by his achievements, and more, by him personally, that after the last class I took from him I wrote him a letter telling him how much I admired him, and how much of an inspiration he was to me. After he got it, he called me into his office and thanked me, telling me how touched he was.
I was very saddened when I heard of his death, and I'm very glad that his colleagues got together and created this volume. Thank you, gentlemen.
I urge anyone who is interested in the subject of computer modeling and simulation to read this book, or any of Karplus' books. You can't do any better in this area.

I am a florist currently working in Kaluville, CA. I was very interested in Germaniums and accidently picked up this book. I was amazed to read this book, though the subject matter was quite difficult to follow, I ended up just reading the pictures. They were pretty. I dont think i have learned anything about germaniums and didnt find anything about silicone implants but its great for the coffee table (its a bit bent).

I bought this book with little 3D experience, hoping it would help guide me. I work in a small company and I am the only CAD user, so there isn't any help in the next office. This book taught me how to use 3D drawings to produce prints in probably a third of the time it used to by drawing all three views. Plus, in our shop, isometric views are almost a must to understand many prints, which has reduced our production time greatly. I am fairly well versed now in 3D, but I still reference the book almost weekly.
I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have time for courses and understands 2D construction.

Systems Modeling for Business Process Improvement Review

Systems Modeling for Business Process Improvement
Average Reviews:

This book is technology-focused with an emphasis on software-to-business alignment from the perspectives of quality and fit. It's a collection of papers that cover the range of related topics, including systems dynamics, object-oriented business process modeling, exploiting knowledge in adaptive workflow systems and modeling and metrics techniques.
Process improvement strategies are related to software quality and are highlighted in two chapters: (1) ISO 15504, SPICE (Software Process Improvement Capability dEtermination) and FEAST/1 (Feedback, Evolution And Software Technology), which was sponsored by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The material on FEAST/1 has been superseded by FEAST/2, but is still valid. Both SPICE and FEAST/1 chapters provide evaluation frameworks for determining software processes, which in turn is an indicator of how well systems modeling aligns to aspects of business processes.
The chapters which I felt were especially useful dealt with requirements and modeling, including:
- "Information Systems Specifications within the Framework of Client-Led Design"
- "Developing a Business-IT Co-Evolutionary Change Plan"
- "Relating Organizational Symbiotics, Process Modeling, and Stakeholder Viewpoints to Elucidate and Record Requirements"
- "Modeling Organizational Communication: Top Down Analysis & Bottom Up Diagnosis"
These reflect my current professional interests; however, I also gained insights from the chapter on FEAST/1 and "Modeling Information System Requirements for Complex Systems", both of which were thought provoking and addressed subtle issues that I hadn't previously thought of.
This book is not a primary text on business process modeling. It is most useful to experienced process improvement and requirements analysts and modeling professionals. Also not that much of the material needs to be force-fit to approaches such as UML, but does supplement UML and Unified Process methodologies if you keep an open mind and extract the key ideas presented.

Systems Modeling and Requirements Specification Using ECSAM: An Analysis Method for Embedded and Computer-Based Systems Review

Systems Modeling and Requirements Specification Using ECSAM: An Analysis Method for Embedded and Computer-Based Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have seen many a new textbook come to the market advancing the use of a new and novel approach to specifying system and/or software requirements. All too often these approaches breakdown when you try to implement them because not all of the details have been worked out. As a direct consequence, users of the methodology experience considerable pain because they have to mature the methodology and address the details as they try to develop their requirements specifications.
In contrast, this book provides its readers with a tried and true approach to systems/software requirements specification and analysis. The book steps you through the Embedded Computer Systems Analysis and Modeling (ECSAM) method. It shows you how to use the methodology to develop static and dynamic models of the system using an end-to-end example. The book emphasizes how to capture the functional, interface and performance requirements by overlaying the static with dynamic models and by verifying the results via analysis as they are generated. In addition, the book takes operational considerations into account as the evolving specification is developed and tested for completeness and consistency. The book also shows you how to decompose the system requirements to the subsystem level and test for correctness. Results are easy to understand because the methodology uses familiar graphical representations that adhere to well-defined semantics and strict modeling rules (functional flow diagrams, state charts, etc.) to portray its outputs. Most importantly, the book provides the reader with insights into what to look for and what not. This is what I find missing in most of the newer and more revolutionary works on the topic.
The ECSAM methodology seems applicable to many classes of systems which are driven by performance and operational considerations. The book is extremely useful for those who want to use a methodology that permits them to develop a robust and consistent set of requirements for a system or subsystem.

Discover ECSAM, a method for requirements engineering and the modeling of computer-based systems (CBS).Practiced since 1980 in evolving versions by systems and software engineers, ECSAM was developed in part at Israel Aircraft Industries for the analysis and design of complex reactive embedded systems and software and has been presented in numerous undergraduate, graduate, and industrial courses. The method guides engineers in modeling operational, functional, and design requirements, considering both static and dynamic aspects of systems. With an end-to-end example of the method, developed throughout the book, readers learn how to * develop conceptual models of the structural and operational properties of computer-based systems and their software* develop systematically operational scenarios and use cases describing the interaction of the system with its environment * elicit and specify functional and nonfunctional requirements * allocate requirements to components of a conceptual model and use the model for the refinement and derivation of requirements* understand the issues of mapping the conceptual model to the design modelCore audiences include those involved in the development of complex or mission-critical computer-based systems and their software, systems engineers, computer-based-systems engineers, software engineers, engineering managers, and students at undergraduate and graduate levels.

This is aimed at the high school level but does an amazingly good job explaining dynamic modeling, difference equations, and scalar contractions at that level. This is good for building intuition since there are a lot of bite-sized problems. The pure mathematical content could be compressed into a book about one-third the size. The author makes interesting connections between classical Greek mathematics and iterative algebra.

This book provides a good introduction into Monte Carlo simulation for so-called microbeam analysis.
I read this book to start up my work on image formation of scanning electron microscopy. This book was really useful to understand how the Monte Carlo technique could be realized in my lap-top.
Although the author provides a complete set of PASCAL codes,
it was not difficult to convert them into C/C++ based my programming codes.
This book contains many references, mainly journal papers.
So advanced modificaion may require ones to read these articles.
But without this kind of text book,
the analysis by Monte Carlo technique would be more difficult.
To understand the physical background of electron transport in a specimen,
I recommend to read SEM text books by Reimer or by Goldstein et al.

This book describes for the first time how Monte Carlo modeling methods can be applied to electron microscopy and microanalysis.Computer programs for two basic types of Monte Carlo simulation are developed from physical models of the electron scattering process--a single scattering program capable of high accuracy but requiring long computation times, and a plural scattering program which is less accurate but much more rapid.Optimized for use on personal computers, the programs provide a real time graphical display of the interaction. The programs are then used as the starting point for the development of programs aimed at studying particular effects in the electron microscope, including backscattering, secondary electron production, EBIC and cathodo-luminescence imaging, and X-ray microanalysis. The computer code is given in a fully annotated format so that it may be readily modified for specific problems.Throughout, the author includes numerous examples of how such applications can be used. Students and professionals using electron microscopes will want to read this important addition to the literature.

The disadvantages of the use of high power electronics apparatus in utility applications, I believe, are their high installation cost and the operating cost, especially, in terms of continuous power loss in the semiconductor devices. Therefore, I am always interested to know the theory of the lowest loss Voltage-Sourced Converters for industrial/utility applications. The detailed switching model in chapter 7 and the behavioral switching model in chapter 6 and the comparison with the behavioral average model in chapter 8 are exceptional. The book is written by Engineers for the Engineers. Great work!

Handbook of Formal Languages: Volume 2. Linear Modeling: Background and Application

(More customer reviews)
As a Ph.D. candidate working in parsing and interested in model-theoretic syntax, I have found this book to be very useful. I have become very interested in the relation between languages, automata and logic, and how they relate to parsing and deduction. This handbook presents these things with some extra tidbits in chapters which from what I have read - I haven't read the whole book - are well-written and accessible. And the authors point out connections between each other's work.
What is especially interesting to me is the focus on languages where the chosen models are not strings, but instead trees, graphs, etc. For example, my present work is about semiring parsing, with tree automata as the operational model. I am interested in applying parsing as deduction to models which are arbitrary classes of graphs described by grammars written as formulas in some logic. Having recently bought this handbook for future reference, I was delighted to find a very accessible and useful chapter on tree automata which related to work I just started.
For my interests, the chapters on graph grammars, term rewriting and on automata, languages and logic are also enticing and I look forward to reading them as well. The other chapters aren't central to my own work, but I also look forward to reading them, for they seem interesting.
I encourage any researcher working with languages, whether they be artificial ones like XML trees, graphs representing networks or proofs, or they are natural languages, who would like to enter the new millenium to read this book as well as the other volumes of the Handbook of Formal Languages.

I picked this book up when it was hot off the press in February and found it to be an invaluable tool for any actor or actress planning on moving to Los Angeles. The book contains thousands of phone numbers for just about anything the working actor needs. It familiarizes you with the city, lets you know what to expect about the field, and encourages you to give it your best. There are chapters that explain all the major guilds and how to be admitted. The book takes you through a guided program on getting headshots, landing an agent, and fitting yourself into the Los Angeles acting market. One chapter is all about finding a night time survival job to pay the bills while you attend auditions during the day. Another chapter covers the audition process and most of the publications in the industry. The only problem with this book is the title. Modeling is mentioned sporadically throughout the book even though the title makes you think that modeling is covered as much as acting. If you are an aspiring model I do not recommend this book. I only recommend this book to anyone planning on pursuing an acting career in the Los Angeles area.
