Organic chemistry is difficult for many people but A's are essentiel for those pursuing careers in the medical field. To truly understand organic chemistry, one must be able to visual the structural makeup in total 3-D. Making models is extremely helpful. It pulled me from a "B" to an "A".

I think this book is by far the best book for a course on so called "factory physics." Notation, explanations and examples are clear and there are many good problems. I think there is no other book that is near as good.

This text presents the practical application of queueing theory results for the design and analysis of manufacturing and production systems. This textbook makes accessible to undergraduates and beginning graduates many of the seemingly esoteric results of queueing theory. In an effort to apply queueing theory to practical problems, there has been considerable research over the previous few decades in developing reasonable approximations of queueing results. This text takes full advantage of these results and indicates how to apply queueing approximations for the analysis of manufacturing systems. Support is provided through the web site http://msma.tamu.edu. Students will have access to the answers of odd numbered problems and instructors will be provided with a full solutions manual, Excel files when needed for homework, and computer programs using Mathematica that can be used to solve homework and develop additional problems or term projects. In this second edition a separate appendix dealing with some of the basic event-driven simulation concepts has been added.

Mastering Revit Architecture 2009 Review

Mastering Revit Architecture 2009

I bought this title after purchasing and working through _Introducing Revit Architecture 2009: BIM for Beginners_. I had already built a case study building model and needed a reference for the things I wanted to do that weren't covered in the beginner book. Mastering Revit Architecture 2009 has fulfilled that role. I find it more readable than most computer books, a lot less of "insert tab A into Slot 2" instruction that leaves you lost in the middle of it. Still, it isn't about "mastering" the application. Maybe it should be titled _Wrestling with Revit Architecture 2009_ as the more I use Revit the more I realize just how far from mastery I am. For anyone wanting to learn, however, Mastering Revit Architecture 2009 will help you get through.

Analysis and Algorithms for Service Parts Supply Chains (Springer Series in Operations Research and Financial Engineering) Review

Analysis and Algorithms for Service Parts Supply Chains (Springer Series in Operations Research and Financial Engineering)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my 25-year career in the equipment service business, a few books stand out as being the most noteworthy contributions to the management of service parts. They include Robert G. Brown's Advanced Service Parts Inventory Control (1982), Joseph D. Patton Jr.'s Service Parts Management (1984), and Craig C. Sherbrooke's Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems: Multi-Echelon Techniques (1992). This new volume by Muckstadt stands to be the most significant contribution to the business of managing service parts since Sherbrooke's volume.
Brown's book teaches the practitioner how to apply the principles and methods developed by him and others to the practical management of service parts. Brown's pioneering work in forecasting and inventory control methodologies forms the basis of current practice across many industries. Patton's volume (along with it's subsequent revisions) is a practitioner's desk reference that provides a convenient overview of the issues and methods employed in the industry from the viewpoint of one with years of experience managing and consulting to the industry. Sherbrooke produced pioneering work in the area of service inventory supply optimization while working at the RAND Corporation for Department of Defense applications in the military. In fact, the most sophisticated service parts supply optimization methodologies in existence today are outgrowths of Sherbrooke's original work at RAND and further research by the Operations Research community.
This new text by Muckstadt is an important contribution in three ways. First, it pulls together in one text much of the significant research related to service parts supply chain optimization to date. Researchers, consultants and practitioners will find that the 260-reference bibliography itself is worth the cost in timesavings in researching the many papers that have been written on the subject. Second, it teaches students of Operations Research the underlying concepts and how to specify and formulate optimization models for service parts applications. Graduate students who complete the material in the text will be well prepared to conduct further research of their own. Finally, Chapters 6 and 10 present valuable new approaches heretofore never published. The time-based service objectives in Chapter 6 directly reflect the manner in which service contracts in high technology industries are written. Decision models that operate in real-time such as those described in Chapter 10 offer the greatest potential for advancing the effectiveness of service parts supply chains.

Multidimensional Item Response Theory (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences) Review

Multidimensional Item Response Theory (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The MIRT sub-field of psychometrics has for years labored in obscurity, due in no small part to the inability of its practitioners and students to understand each other and master each other's algorithms and models. Reckase, one of the field's leaders, takes a bold step in correcting the situation. Excellently researched, clearly written, logically presented, fair and balanced, Reckase summarizes the foundations of probabilistic unidimensional models and shows how they generalize, so that persons (test examinees) and items (test questions) can be represented as points (vectors) floating around in a multidimensional space.
This is not a book for the field practitioner or the casual researcher. It does not skip over the math, and the math is hard-core. Nonetheless, it is surprisingly readable. The reader will be pleased to find himself following the gist of Reckase's explanations without difficulty, even when the mathematical details are too much.
To appreciate this work, it is important to know why MIRT is important. Unfortunately, Reckase never tells us. We understand that MIRT is motivated by the fact that items and tests are complex, that they embody multiple dimensions, that therefore a multidimensional model is necessary. This hardly touches the surface. As the fantastic drama of the Netflix contest revealed (a recently resolved contest to win $1 m. for best predicting movie ratings), we live in a world of psychological profiling and prediction, a world populated by weird and incredible mathematical models that touch on every aspect of life -- from selecting food at Safeway, to renting movies, to profiling terrorists, to guiding teacher instructional decisions, to training computers to read and understand text and recognize the spoken word. None of that is in this book. The great divide between educational psychometrics and "data mining" or "knowledge discovery" has yet to be crossed. MIRT is the subfield within educational psychometrics that will ultimately bridge that divide.
On the theory side, Reckase does not conceal his differences with the "Rasch School" of psychometrics (of which I am a member) regarding the purpose of educational measurement and modeling, though he is obviously well-versed in Rasch models and presents them well, including their MIRT flavors. He sees the purpose of a model to be "descriptive" (to describe the data closely), whereas Rasch theorists see the purpose of a model to be "prescriptive" (to prescribe the conditions under which data yield true measures, i.e., measures that are most likely to reproduce across datasets regardless of person and item samples). The models that Reckase speaks about with the confidence of personal knowledge are "descriptive" in this sense.
Due perhaps to his preference for descriptive models, I found there were certain questions that Reckase did not seem to spend time on, questions that are huge for me:
1. How well do MIRT models handle small sample sizes?
2. How do they handle missing data, whether randomly or non-randomly missing?
3. To what degree are the person and item parameters invariant across samples? Can I cherry-pick my samples and get different parameters?
These are the sorts of questions Rasch people are always asking and where the Rasch model, properly used, has much to offer.
I also found myself looking in vain for discussion of Rasch's "specific objectivity" property as relates to MIRT, often called the "invariance" property. I learned that Reckase means something else entirely by the same word. In the Rasch world, "invariance" means that item and person parameters, and the resulting response probabilities, are invariant across samples, that persons will obtain the same relative measures regardless of what items they are administered so long as the items embody the same dimension. For Reckase, "invariance" means that the origin and orientation of the coordinate system can be moved without affecting the response probabilities. It's got nothing to do with samples. So, in the end, I still don't know what, if any, invariance properties the various MIRT models discussed in the book possess, defining "invariance" in the Rasch sense as invariance across person and item samples.

But those are my problems, not Reckase's. This book is a significant step forward in the maturation of an extraordinarily important, but little known, field.

German Soldiers of World War Two Review

German Soldiers of World War Two
Average Reviews:

Another excellent book from HISTORE & COLLECTIONS this time it's the Germans of World War 2.
It is 135 pages of high quality photographs of re-creators in authentic uniforms from all theatres that the Germans operated in.
The book is divided in to years from 1939 - 1945 so it easy to see what uniforms and equipment were worn in particular areas at particular times.
All insignia (No political correctness here) are shown with appropriate weapons and webbing.
The only thing missing from this book is photographs from the field which would show how appearances can alter after the normal wear & tear of a soldier's life
I have spent much money over the years on cheaper books which showed some of the information I was after but this book supplies most of the information you will need, be it for scale modelling or historical studies.
It is a must for any student of World War 2 uniforms.

Histoire and Collections' all time best selling book was German Soldiers of World War II. Long out of print it has been sought by collectors and enthusiasts commanding high prices in used book market.

This long awaited reprint is actually far more than that. The new version includes significant additional material. Every soldier is shown on a full page, front and back with numerous detail shots of head gear, equipment etc.

The chronological order of the original edition is retained, while the widest selection of types of IIIrd Reich armed forces members is featured, from the most famous uniforms to the more obscure.

Measurements and Modeling of Moisture in Transformer Insulation Review

Measurements and Modeling of Moisture in Transformer Insulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a published version of Dr. Yanqing Du's Ph.D. thesis from MIT which she completed in 1999. The thesis includes equilibrium data for moisture in the presense of paper and dielectric fluid as a function of temperature. These data provide an indication of the conditions under which the dielectric fluid can become saturated at elevated temperature, leading to liquid moisture in the fluid and probable electrical breakdown. Such phenomena probably account for some of the major distribution outages in large cities caused by cascading failures of PILC (paper insulated lead covered) cable during hot summer months, although the work in the thesis and now book was directed more toward transformer insulation systems.

The presence of moisture in a transformer deteriorates the insulation by decreasing its electrical, mechanical, and thermal strength. Therefore, it is critical to monitor the moisture condition in both liquid and solid insulation. This book performs an extensive study of on-line moisture monitoring for transformer insulation systems and provides new tools and advanced approaches on this topic. A new set of moisture equilibrium curves for oil and paper systems is constructed with a wider range than reported in prior literature.Such curves can be used to predict moisture in the paper insulation from oil moisture measurements taken when the system is in equilibrium. When the system is not in equilibrium, the three-wavelength interdigital dielectrometry sensor developed at MIT provides a unique way to non-destructively measure the spatial profile of the moisture distribution in transformer pressboard.A universal curve is found relating dielectric properties to moisture concentration and temperature. The diffusion coefficient for pressboard as a function of temperature and moisture concentration is estimated.

Mastering Maya 2009 Review

I've been vigorously studying Motion Graphics related topics for the past few years, and have read literally hundreds of books and taken thousands of hours of online training via Lynda.com. I've managed to get my Adobe certifications in: Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator & Premiere/Encore and currently working on getting certified in After Effects. I am also the author of the Flash exam for examaids. I have been trying to study Maya for the past couple of years and have been extremely frustrated with the level of training anywhere. The best I had found was actually in the help sections of Maya. I realized how complex Maya was, but I was starting to get the feeling no one either could explain it, or understood the depths of it to pass the knowledge on. I found myself unable to get through the "beginners books". That is until I found the "Mastering Maya 2009" book! Finally, someone who understands the product who can share in-depth without skipping steps in the process. I'm so impressed with it, that I'm rating it already as one of the 4 best graphics books of all-time. The other 3 would be the Ben Willmore's Photoshop Studio Techniques, Chris & Trish Meyer's Motion Graphics with After Effects, and Mordy Golding's Real World Illustrator book. Fantastic book! I give it my highest rating and total endorsement!

Bayesian Adaptive Methods for Clinical Trials (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series) Review

Bayesian Adaptive Methods for Clinical Trials (Chapman and Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the pharmaceutical industry adaptive designs are currently the rage because of their many potential advantages due to their flexibility. It allows you to stop early for efficacy or futility. It can do drug dose selection more easily and may have patients on inferior treatment for smaller amounts of time. There have already been four or five books published from the frequentist point of view. This is the first serious text on adaptive designs using the Bayesian approach. Pharmaceutical companies including Johnson and Johnson, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Merck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Millennium, AMAG and GlaxoSmithKline have all been successful at running adaptive trials. Merck for example has already completed more than 40 adaptive design trials. Such trials can be done in phase II, phase III or a combining of phases II and III in a single adaptive trial. Merck claims to have completed over 40 adaptive trials. The M D Anderson Medical Center at UT Houston runs hundreds of adaptive trials (all as far as I know using the Bayesian methodology). Don Berry runs the biostatistics group at M D Anderson and he and his son scott own a consulting group that helps companies run Bayesian adaptive designs. Eli Lilly has been one of their clients on a drug trial and Biosense Webster, a J& J company, used them for a Bayesian trial on one of their ablation catheters. Scott Berry isone of the authors of this book and a lot of the book is devoted to work of Berry first at Duke and then later at M D Anderson and Berry Consultants.
Adaptive designs have logistic problems but companies have been able to overcome the problems motivated by the overall time and money saving benefits. All types of studies are illustrated from phase I through phase III and the examples are real and practical. Even when taking the Bayesian approach issues of frequentist properties for the designs comes up. Missing data, multiple testing, type I error and power of the test conditional and unconidtional are important when the frequentist approach is applied. The authors admit that both frequentist and Bayesian properties for a design are important and can be evaluated through simulation.
Although adaptive designs can be implemented effectively using either the Bayesian or the frequentist approaches. But Bayesian trials are a little more natural and simpler. This is the right book to get if you are interested in Bayesian methods.

Already popular in the analysis of medical device trials, adaptive Bayesian designs are increasingly being used in drug development for a wide variety of diseases and conditions, from Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis to obesity, diabetes, hepatitis C, and HIV. Written by leading pioneers of Bayesian clinical trial designs, Bayesian Adaptive Methods for Clinical Trials explores the growing role of Bayesian thinking in the rapidly changing world of clinical trial analysis. The book first summarizes the current state of clinical trial design and analysis and introduces the main ideas and potential benefits of a Bayesian alternative. It then gives an overview of basic Bayesian methodological and computational tools needed for Bayesian clinical trials. With a focus on Bayesian designs that achieve good power and Type I error, the next chapters present Bayesian tools useful in early (Phase I) and middle (Phase II) clinical trials as well as two recent Bayesian adaptive Phase II studies: the BATTLE and ISPY-2 trials. In the following chapter on late (Phase III) studies, the authors emphasize modern adaptive methods and seamless Phase II-III trials for maximizing information usage and minimizing trial duration. They also describe a case study of a recently approved medical device to treat atrial fibrillation. The concluding chapter covers key special topics, such as the proper use of historical data, equivalence studies, and subgroup analysis. For readers involved in clinical trials research, this book significantly updates and expands their statistical toolkits. The authors provide many detailed examples drawing on real data sets. The R and WinBUGS codes used throughout are available on supporting websites.

Mathematics: Modeling Our World Course 2 Review

Mathematics: Modeling Our World Course 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book seems to be aimed at ninth graders, plus or minus a year, but you wouldn't know it. Other books at this level are condescending arrays of garish color, blaring typography, and irrelevant pictures. They assume that the students biggest concerns are dinosaurs and cheerleading.
Instead, COMAP treats the reader with respect. (Yes, teenagers deserve it.) The book is laid out clearly, with a minimum of distractions. The topics include the best place to locate a firehouse, and many different meanings for the word "best." Its discussion of game theory uses the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example. It describes problems directly related to Internet routing and optimal connectivity. It does lots more, too, with only a very introductory amount of algebra.
This book does at least three things very well. First, it teaches the student many different tools for solving any problem. Second, it shows the students many problems suited to each of the tools. Third, it encourages the student to think in a constructively critical and self-critical way: Is this answer really the right one? What does the equation actually mean? What parts of this problem just aren't suited to mathematical analysis? Can I solve this at all, given the information at hand?
Every student comes out of this program with solid skills. Even the ones who aren't math whizzes must master the basics to pass this course, unlike other math books that just encourage them to write down how the feel about math. The best students are given a gentle but solid shove forward. You have to look for them carefully, but one or two problems in each section require serious creativity and insight. Any student who cracks one of those gets a real sense of accomplishment. I'm not talking about feel-good arithmetic where the warm fuzzies are compulsory, I mean a sense of having pushed personal limits and become stronger in the process.
The book does not name a particular grade for which it is intended, but basic algebra would probably come one or two years after this. In the mean time, it gives students a wide variety of different tools and a sense that they're solving problems that matter. I've looked at only one other textbook at this level, and it was terrible. If you're free to choose any text for your student, consider this one seriously. It's clear, it's filled with connections to past and future math courses, and it shows how math addresses practical and social problems.

I have profitably used the book to apply constrained minimization procedures in the field of computational contact mechanics. I think it is not a secret that quite often books on mathematics are written from matematicians for matematicians. Hence it is quite hard for engineers both to read and to extract valuable information from them. With this respect this book is a shining star. It presents the topics in a very precise but clear and understandable way. Moreover the notation also is the best compromise between coinciseness and clarity. Matematicians, please, look at this book and follow such style; we engineer desperately need to communicate with you.
