Instructional Design in the Real World: A View from the Trenches (Advanced Topics in Information Resources Management) Review

Instructional Design in the Real World: A View from the Trenches (Advanced Topics in Information Resources Management)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Instructional design in the real world: a view from the trenches", by Anne-Marie Armstrong was published by Information Science Publishing in 2004. The author has thoughtfully compiled accounts of many different instructional designers throughout the world. The designers report on the various models and businesses that they have worked for. Many of the designers were hired to create online or e-learning modules. They discussed the successes and failures of their ventures. I will be honest; my first reaction to reading this book was not positive. But, as I engaged myself in the reading, it was a very easy read. The authors of each "story" were very honest when describing their working situations. Many reflected on mistakes they made in the ID process, others reflected on what worked best within the process.
The part of the book that I enjoyed most was that the Instructional Designers realized the importance of knowing the needs of your learner. One of my favorite quotes was that "Learners were considered identical, homogeneous raw
materials in a standard process of educational production (Cameron, 1996). They were considered as an empty vessel that only needed filling. Hence, there was no active communication between instructional developers and learners during the learner analysis process" (p.3). As an instructional designer especially for the online learner, it is very hard to know a learner that you never see or come in contact with, however, the author still keeps this in the forefront of what we should keep in mind when designing instruction.
The chapter that stuck out in my mind was the one that specifically dealt with knowing the needs of your learner. There was a case study on how job aids are used in a manufacturing plant. The instructional designers realized after the needs analysis of the learners, that they did not need full content learning, but specific tasks the worker could look up. The author compared the information they needed to a phone book. The learner already knows how to use the phone; they just need specific phone numbers sometimes.
In closing, this book really opened my eyes to the
role of the instructional designer, especially as they worked with the company and the SME (Subject Matter Expert). As the designers of an online course stated, "Merrill (1997) is often quoted as saying `information is not instruction.' This simple and profound statement seems to make a whole lot of sense; there's a lot more to teaching than just telling students about something and then expecting knowledge and skills to magically appear. Yet what we find in a majority of textbooks, lecture halls, and online courses is a whole lot of telling and not much instruction. We certainly didn't want our course to be categorized as just another "electronic page-turner" (p. 171-172). We can not expect to throw information out there and expect people to learn. The instructional design process must be carried out to achieve high levels of learning.

UML by Example (Sigs: Advances in Object Techn) Review

UML by Example (Sigs: Advances in Object Techn)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A great book, although a bit smaller then most UML books, this is one of those instances that quality definitely came out on top over quantity.
The first section reviews UML in general, what the symbols are and when and how to use them.
Section two is the real meat of the book, showing what every person wanting to learn programming always has a problem with, and usually turns out to be that turning point where they give up learning to program. Its not the learning of a language syntax and its nuances that is the real challenge of learning to program (although at times . . .). It is trying to come up with an application or object oriented script that fits a need you must address, and then the process of figuring out how you should build it from an OO point of view. Section two has 2 chapters. Each has an example of taking a high level idea and breaking it down using the "Bridge" method used in this book, until you finally have a complete UML class diagram. At which point you can then start your coding in the OO language of your choice.
Section three is more or less a repeat of section two only the answers and examples are not provided for you. Section 3 is a set of exercises. Concepts of applications (customer requirements doc) are provided and you do the UML designs.
Section 2 though is where all the real action is at.
I give this book 4 stars and not 5 because of two things:
I. An authors version of the answers to section 3 are not provided to you for comparison to the results you come up with after going through exercise.
II. The UML used in this book is still based on UML 1.x and not 2.x. This book is great but screams for a second edition written with UML 2.x in mind.

Ghinwa Jalloul's step-by-step introduction to object-oriented software development is suitable for teacher training as well as for practicing software engineers.Jalloul presents seven complete case studies and several smaller examples documented in UML, derived from small software projects developed for, and delivered to, real users. They are preceded by an overview of the object-oriented modeling artifacts in UML, on which the remainder of the book relies. The case studies provide a medium for experimental use and act as templates that can be tailored by readers to fit specific needs and circumstances.

An Introduction to Queueing Theory: and Matrix-Analytic Methods Review

An Introduction to Queueing Theory: and Matrix-Analytic Methods
Average Reviews:

I haven't read the book. However, from its content I know it is a good book. It seems that everyone loves "Fundamentals of Queueing Theory". However, it has too many pages. 464 pages. I can not believe someone can finish it mostly unless he/she uses that book for textbook and has a weekly lecture about this book. Therefore, if you have good mathematical skill and plan to self-study queueing theory, this is the book for you.

Click Here to see more reviews about: An Introduction to Queueing Theory: and Matrix-Analytic Methods

The textbook contains the records of a two-semester course on queueing theory, including an introduction to matrix-analytic methods. The course is directed to last year undergraduate and first year graduate students of applied probability and computer science, who have already completed an introduction to probability theory. Its purpose is to present material that is close enough to concrete queueing models and their applications, while providing a sound mathematical foundation for their analysis. A prominent part of the book will be devoted to matrix-analytic methods. This is a collection of approaches which extend the applicability of Markov renewal methods to queueing theory by introducing a finite number of auxiliary states. For the embedded Markov chains this leads to transition matrices in block form resembling the structure of classical models. Matrix-analytic methods have become quite popular in queueing theory during the last twenty years. The intention to include these in a students' introduction to queueing theory has been the main motivation for the authors to write the present book. Its aim is a presentation of the most important matrix-analytic concepts like phase-type distributions, Markovian arrival processes, the GI/PH/1 and BMAP/G/1 queues as well as QBDs and discrete time approaches.

WWII Aircraft Vol. III: Modeling, Detailing, Painting Weathering and Building Dioramas Review

WWII Aircraft Vol. III: Modeling, Detailing, Painting Weathering and Building Dioramas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this volume and Vol II, thinking they would provide a wealth of information to take my modelling skills higher. Sadly, that is missing in these books.
Sure, there are truckloads of photos all in glossy color. But nowhere is there proper detail about the steps actually involved in making of the dios, like painting, weathering, etc. This is what this book primarily lacks.
Another disappointing fact is that the books are superb advertisements for the VP range of products, which are too expensive for the average modeller, who could as well scratchbuild some of the stuff on display.
In some cases, the creators of the models even go to great extents in detailing interior stuff, which wouldn't be seen anyway after the model is assembled. Why anybody would invest money and time in putting in stuff which is not visibile is a million dollar question.
If you are looking for a book on improving your modelling skills, this is no match for Mike Ashey's books. Both of Ashey's books are worth their while in gold.
Buy this book only if you are interested in getting ideas for your a/c dios. Not for improving your modelling or painting skills!

Come, Let's Play: Scenario-Based Programming Using LSCs and the Play-Engine
Average Reviews:

The competing forces of Time-to-Market and Software Quality have for years begged a narrowing of the requirements-to-product divide. In "Come, Let's Play", world-renowned ACM Outstanding Educator Award recipient Harel and master software engineer Marelly join forces in clearly presenting their novel, intuitive method for driving the software product directly from the GUI specification. Like Harel's previous works, the text is thorough, enlightening, clear and truly a pleasure to read.

This book presents a powerful new language and methodology for programming complex reactive systems in a scenario-based manner. The language is live sequence charts (LSCs), a multimodal extension of sequence charts and UML's sequence diagrams, used in the past mainly for requirements. The methodology is play-in/play-out, an unusually convenient means for specifying inter-object scenario-based behavior directly from a GUI or an object model diagram, with the surprising ability to execute that behavior, or those requirements, directly. The language and methodology are supported by a fully implemented tool - the Play-Engine - which is attached to the book in CD form.Comments from experts in the field:The design of reactive systems is one of the most challenging problems in computer science. This books starts with a critical insight to explain the difficulty of this problem: there is a fundamental gap between the scenario-based way in which people think about such systems and the state-based way in which these systems are implemented. The book then offers a radical proposal to bridge this gap by means of playing scenarios. Systems can be specified by playing in scenarios and implemented by means of a Play-Engine that plays out scenarios. This idea is carried out and developed, lucidly, formally and playfully, to its fullest. The result is a compelling proposal, accompanied by a prototype software engine, for reactive systems design, which is bound to cause a splash in the software-engineering community. Moshe Y. Vardi, Rice University, Houston, Texas, USAScenarios are a primary exchange tool in explaining system behavior to others, but their limited expressive power never made them able to fully describe systems, thus limiting their use. The language of Live Sequence Charts (LSCs) presented in this beautifully written book achieves this goal, and the attached Play-Engine software makes these LSCs really come alive. This is undoubtedly a key breakthrough that will start long-awaited and exciting new directions in systems specification, synthesis, and analysis. Gérard Berry, Esterel Technologies and INRIA, Sophia-Antipolis, FranceThe approach of David Harel and Rami Marelly is a fascinating way of combining prototyping techniques with techniques for identifying behavior and user interfaces. A fine bridge between theoretical geometrical methods and applications for the visualizaition was built in this book.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Topological Modeling for Visualization

The main goal of this textbook is to establish a bridge between the theoretical aspects of modern geometry and topology on the one hand and computer experimental geometry on the other. Thus the theory and application of mathematical visualization are given equal emphasis. This, along with the ample illustrations and the fact that each chapter is designed as an independent unit, makes Topological Modeling for Visualization a unique book in its field. The two internationally famous authors, A. T. Fomenko and T. L. Kunii, thoroughly explain the necessary mathematical techniques so that undergraduate students with only a grounding in high-school mathematics can benefit from using this book. While linear problems are covered, the emphasis is on nonlinear problems, with many examples relating to natural phenomena and todays abundant information sources. Students in the fields of mathematics and computing will find it rigorous enough to serve as a basic text in differential geometry and topology, while students from fields as diverse as cognitive science and economics who need to solve nonlinear problems will find this book indispensable.

Modeling the Earth's Climate and its Variability, Volume 67 (Les Houches) Review

Modeling the Earth's Climate and its Variability, Volume 67 (Les Houches)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As computers have grown in power over the last 20 years, climate modelling has become more and more powerful. Assumptions that had to be made in the 1980s, due to computational restrictions, like a two dimensional simulation, instead of a three dimensional one, have been abandoned.
The book gives you an idea of the state of modelling, as of 1999. Plus, as its necessary companion, climate observations. The book emphasises the correlation of these as necessary to improving the models. An expertise in the pure computational algorithms is not enough.
Given the ongoing advances in computing hardware, some aspects of the book are undoubtedly already slightly behind the times. But most of the ideas are still current and useful.

Understanding and predicting the Earth's climate system, particularly climate variability and possible human-induced climate change, presents one of the most difficult and urgent challenges in science. Climate scientists worldwide have responded to that challenge over the past decade by creating a wide variety of ever more sophisticated climate models that are beginning to show considerable ability to replicate many aspects of the climate system. At the same time, to fully understand climate change, one also has to look to past climates. For this purpose five eminent scholars who span the disciplines of modeling and observation, including elements of past, present and future climate studies came together at this Les Houches school. They presented a systematic development of each of their respective subjects which provided a comprehensive overview of this vast and complex subject. These core lectures were supplemented by a set of shorter lectures and of seminars.

If you like "Intro to Operations Research" by Hillier and Lieberman (0072416181), you will have two feelings about this book. The less-math-background people will find this is the best-fit for them for its less mathematical theories. Math-people will find this book is only introductory book. However, this book is not a substitution for 0072416181. This book is more application and focus on modeling and applying issues; while 0072416181 is more on solving. The spreadsheet application are now included in this book. Many traditional terms of OR are revised to make it more understandable, e.g., What-if (sensitivity analysis), Yes-No question (BIP). Several success stories and cases of OR/MS are given as well as the "how-to". I found this is a good book for business students or manager who has less time in solving than making money. Many sections are dedicated for popular problems, e.g., Inventory management, transportation, Forecasting, Project management. While this book is quite introductory book, the further study are given, e.g., IP, QAP, Goal Prog. After reading my review, please be silent for one minute to pay respect for Dr. Gerald J. Lieberman, co-author of this book and 0072416181. I'm indebted for your work...

The central theme of this book and course is functions as models of change. The authors emphasize that functions can be grouped into families and that functions can be used as models for real-world behavior. Because linear, exponential, power, and periodic functions are more frequently used to model physical phenomena, they are introduced before polynomial and rational functions. Once introduced, a family of functions is compared and contrasted with other families of functions.

I truley enjoyed the book, " How to Enter the business of Commercial Modeling & Acting...Without Getting Ripped Off!"! I have learned how to act in college, but never how to make great money acting in the business! I never realized how simple it was for someone to get started in commercial modeling and acting! This book is great because it holds your hand throughout the book and makes it so simple to get started. I have already loaned it to a few freinds and a stage mom or two! It was also great to read the interviews from actors, models and the folks who hire talent. The book covered the entire spectrum of the business. I would advise that not only "new" talent read this but experienced as well. I think it is awesome that the author took the time to write this book because anyone reading it CAN NOT GET SCAMMED IN THE INDUSTRY! Like Morgan Creek Productions quoted on the back of the book, "Shark repellent for the sertious actor" it couldn't have been said better! So many people think that they have to be beautiful to model...WRONG! The Author made a great point..He said that "real" people target the"real" consumer. As a matter of fact, when I watched TV after reading the book, it was about 80% real people in the tv commercials. Even radio commercials lately have the everyday type of voice as opposed to the radio announcer type of voice. I never realized there was such a demand for people like me in the commercial industry.
